Max Power Electrical

Why Is My Power Point Not Working?

1. Burnt-Out or Aged Power Points

Over time, power points can wear out. If you notice discolouration, a burning smell, or heat coming from the socket, it’s likely the outlet is damaged. This could result from:

  • Age or deterioration

  • Overuse (e.g. high-powered appliances)

  • Faulty installation

⚠️ Don’t touch a burnt outlet — it can be a fire or shock hazard. Call a licensed electrician immediately.

2. Tripped Safety Switch or Circuit Breaker

If too many appliances are drawing power on one circuit, your safety switch may trip to prevent overloading. To check:

  • Go to your switchboard and look for switches that are in the “off” position

  • Try resetting the switch

  • If it trips again straight away, you may have a wiring fault or appliance issue

Max Power Electrical specialise in fault detection and repair, so we can quickly locate the issue.

3. Street or Area-Wide Power Outage

Sometimes the issue is outside your home. If all your lights and appliances are off:

  • Check your smart meter — no lights may mean no power from the grid

  • Look outside — if streetlights or neighbours are affected, it’s likely a local outage

  • Contact your electricity provider for outage updates

4. Faulty Appliance — Not the Power Point!

Before assuming your power point is to blame, try:

  • Testing another appliance in the same socket

  • Trying the original appliance in a different power point

If the second appliance works, it’s likely a faulty appliance, not a faulty outlet.

When to Call an Electrician

If you’ve done these checks and still don’t have power — or notice smells, sparks, or signs of damage — it’s time to call a professional.

At Max Power Electrical, we provide:

  • Safe replacement of old power points

  • Installation of double or USB power points
